Christmas and Family Disputes
Each year, FairWay’s Family Dispute Resolution team notice a significant increase in enquiries over the Christmas period.
Christmas can be a stressful time of year for some families, especially when balancing childcare arrangements with an ex-partner. Parents want to create special memories for their children, and that can create added pressures and expectations to have the perfect day. It can also be very difficult if you don’t have your children with you on Christmas Day – not only for parents but for grandparents, the wider whānau and also the children.
From making financial arrangements for gifts, agreeing where the child will spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and organising how each parent can make contact over the holiday period, Christmas can become a minefield for parents and guardians. FairWay’s Family Dispute Resolution team are here to help families who find these discussions difficult, and will assist them to plan for the Christmas period. Family Dispute Resolution provides an opportunity to have honest conversations about what arrangements might work best for your family and your children.
Here to help
“I would recommend that families get in touch with us sooner, rather than later, so we can help them prepare in advance and address any potential issues before the main holidays,” said Keri Morris, Client Director of FairWay’s Family Dispute Resolution service.
When a parent or guardian gets in touch with FairWay, our friendly Resolution Coordinators will explain the process, answer any questions and get in touch with the other party. Following a brief screening and assessment process, which usually takes around 30 minutes, the mediation process can get underway quickly.
In most cases, parties are contacted by their mediator within 48 hours. The mediator will work with both parties to address any immediate needs for the Christmas period, as well as longer term arrangements.
The mediator can work with the parents, guardians and even extended family members to make a short term plan for the Christmas period. Depending on the families’ specific needs, this can cover anything from the arrangements for visiting family members, day to day care over the holidays and even arrangements for gifts and Santa.
In the New Year, the mediator can work with you to develop longer term arrangements.
“We know how stressful this period can be for parents, so we make every effort to help families to develop a workable plan for the Christmas period. I would encourage any parent, guardian or family member with concerns around parenting issues over the holidays to get in touch with our team right away so we can help you to make arrangements,” said Keri.
