Paul is social work qualified and worked for many years in child protection and youth justice fields. Upon establishing an independent business practice, Davey Muir & Associates, in 1997, he became an experienced counsellor, family therapist and specialist report writer for the Family Court.

Paul now works principally in the fields of mediation, counselling, supervision, coaching and communication. Together with colleague Irene Paton he has established two companies: Canterbury Family Dispute Resolution (CFDR), approved as a Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) supplier for the Ministry of Justice, and Optimum Solutions, an approved supplier for ACC Integrated Services for Sensitive Claims (ISSC).

Paul's areas of special interest include family work, abuse treatment and recovery, conflict resolution and mediation, employment issues, problem-solving, relationship issues, supervision and coaching, violence prevention, stress management, social work education.  Paul's modes of practice include cognitive behavioural, narrative therapy, person-centred, mediation, solution-focused, stress management, supervision, trauma-focused therapy.
