Leigh Lawless (Reg. NZAC) is a Voice of Child within the mediation process—an independent, child-focused practitioner dedicated to ensuring that children’s perspectives are heard and meaningfully considered.
With over 23 years of counselling experience, Leigh offers specialist expertise in child-centred play therapy, parenting support, and adult counselling. Her practice is informed by a comprehensive understanding of child development, emotional safety, and the varied communication styles across age groups and specific needs. She has completed degrees and post graduate training in counselling, psychotherapy, child and adolescent mental health as well as trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, and child led play therapy approaches designed to support children and youth in being able to express themselves to the best of their ability.
Leigh places an emphasis on assisting children in communicating safely and ensuring their perspectives are acknowledged and their needs are heard and considered. With experience as a child and family counsellor, Leigh uses methods such as child-led activities, play, and creative talk-based communication to work with individuals of varying ages. This approach aims to help children feel at ease and in addition support any learning or developmental needs.
Leigh is deeply committed to both professional and personal growth. She engages in ongoing training and regular professional and cultural supervision to ensure her practice remains responsive, inclusive, and grounded in best practice.
Alongside her counselling work, Leigh enjoys writing and developing workshops and resources. She has designed self-care workshops for tertiary students and previously facilitated relax kids’ mindfulness classes for children and parents—supporting connection, emotional regulation, and shared learning.
Her passion for community wellbeing extends beyond the therapy room. Leigh has served on local boards, contributed to youth support initiatives, and continues to balance her professional life with being a busy parent of three children.
